GALLERY: SEMINOLE ARTISTS
January 31, 2018
Seminole High School is home to a thriving art scene. Many young and established artists build their skills through classes or independent study; several have taken to social media as a way to expand their audiences. We spoke to four Seminole artists about their crafts, which range from visual arts to calligraphy to magic. Their stories are all different, but the artists share a common dedication to making the world a more beautiful place.
The aesthetically pleasing craft known as calligraphy is more than just fancy handwriting, it is a form of art that’s been around for thousands of years, used to spice up the written word. Although it was historically done with brush pens, students at Seminole, like junior Vy Nguyen, are taking a modern twist to calligraphy.
Nguyen’s interest for the art first sparked when she saw her cousin creating calligraphic fonts. Although she started experimenting with Crayola markers, she soon graduated to brush pens and the tools of a professional. Nguyen said that calligraphy is a useful skill to have because it can be used for decorating cards and signs. She has started promoting her art on her Instagram, @vy.calligraphy.
“[Calligraphy] is fun because it’s nice to see words or letters in a different form,” said Nguyen. “The process of coming up with new designs and fonts is really cool.”
