For many years, Seminole has offered the opportunity for students to dual enroll, take virtual school courses, or do on job the training as opportunities to leave campus early. For the 2020-2021 school year, rising seniors now have the opportunity to apply for a modified schedule. With this new schedule, students can come to school for five out of the seven periods a day.
Before students can apply for the modified schedule, they must meet the following requirements:
Considered a senior in Skyward
On track for graduation
Enrolled in a minimum of 5 courses
Course schedule must be consecutive, no gaps
Can not be in credit denial
Maintain at least a 2.5 unweighted GPA
“College & Career Ready”; meaning you have passed an AP exam with at least a 3 or passed a dual enrollment class with at least a C
Must have personal transportation to and from campus
“Since they all pretty much have the credits, we can allow them to be off campus for those two periods without having any academic courses attached to them. Students who are missing the “College & Career Ready” requirements, but are in an AP class now have the chance to pass their exam,” said Dr. Cindy Nelson.
This new modified schedule can benefit students in many ways. For example, if a senior has less than seven credits left to graduate, they can apply for the schedule as an opportunity to get the credits needed to graduate, without taking other extra and unnecessary credits. The shortened schedule would also give students more time to focus on extracurricular activities, such as sports and clubs, or even to maintain a job.
“I’m doing the modified schedule because I don’t need seven credits for next year and it is going to make senior year a lot easier with doing health and dual enrollment,” said junior Brooke Barnard.
After applying, accepted students are still required to come to school for their five periods daily. This is important as they still need their classroom hours per class to graduate. Students leaving campus earlier may also affect traffic after school, as there may be relatively less students leaving school at the same time.
The modified schedule is a great opportunity for students to continue their education while only being on campus for classes they need to be here for. For more information concerning the schedule, contact Ms. Nelson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
