CLASSIC SWEETS COMPANIES RELEASE NEW FLAVORS

The Hershey’s Company and Oreo—both brands that have been around for over 100 years and are known for signature products such as their chocolate and Oreo Sandwich Cookies—have recently came out with new products. Hershey’s has made new spreadable chocolate flavors, while Oreo has released signature cookie flavors which include cookie dough and marshmallow cream.

The Hershey’s Company decided to release these new spreadable chocolate dips after the success of a hazelnut spread called Nutella. The popular chocolate company’s new spread flavors include chocolate with almonds, chocolate with hazelnut, and chocolate. Hershey’s is hoping for as great of a success with these flavors as it had with Nutella.

Oreo, on the other hand, has released its new flavors as a continuation of its annual limited edition flavor releases. This annual release started in 2012 and has since come out with multiple limited edition flavors including Candy Corn, Ginger Bread, Lemon Twist, Neapolitan, Ice Cream Rainbow Sure, Bert!, and Watermelon. The past success of these limited edition flavors has led Oreo to continue its production of temporary flavors each year.

Sophomore Lindsay Martin said, “I think companies should [continue producing] the limited edition flavors for limited amounts of time. The new flavors are different and will benefit the companies but the original flavors will [remain] classic.”

Others do not encourage the production of these limited edition flavors as much.

“I would just stick [to] the Oreos [and] Nutella. I think the new flavors [they] have already are great so there is no need to make new ones,” said freshman Renelle Collins.

Both brands are perennially successful, as they earn billions of dollars in revenue each year. Hershey’s has come out with many new products since its opening, including cocoa powder, Kisses, and Reese’s peanut butter cups. Oreo has also remained an innovator, with Cookies n’ Creme ice cream, the double-stuffed Oreo, and vanilla Oreos.

Freshman Christian Beardsley said, “I think [Oreo and Hershey’s] are great; they have good products and are always pleasing their customers. It’s no surprise they’re both multimillion dollar companies.”

Oreo’s limited edition flavors will be taken off the market during March to April. Hershey’s has not released any word about new editions.
