DECEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MELODY SWEIGERT

What SHS teacher grew up in Centerville, Ohio with 1 brother and had a mother who taught Spanish? Mrs. Melody Sweigert did, of course. Although she is a skillful Spanish teacher at SHS, teaching wasn’t always her job; her heart belonged to the navy. For 20 years, she committed her service to her country, earning the rank of a Lieutenant Commander. But, before all of the titles and special jobs, she was Melody Wall; a girl from Ohio.

Sweigert went to Centerville High in Ohio. She graduated from school, and went into the military, when she was only 19. Sweigert explained, “The experience was always full of challenges […] (I) had a great deal of responsibility at a young age.” The navy gave her the opportunity to visit 26 different states, 6 Latin American countries, Iceland, Bermuda, and Washington D.C. The military only lasted so long for Sweigert as a career choice; she then chose to teach Spanish, instead.

“I started teaching because my mom was a great teacher […]” stated Sweigert. Before teaching Spanish to high school kids, she taught it at the naval academy. “I’m where I’m belong. I’ve never considered another profession. Besides, I’m already on my second profession.”  Alex Torres said, “Señora Sweigert has been a very effective teacher by showing us with games and explanations. Any questions can be answered.” Teaching is something that came naturally to her, as she stated, “This profession has clicked with my abilities, experiences, and talents.”

Seminole High School has had the opportunity to have Sweigert for 14 years. She not only teaches, but she also engages herself in beta chi activities and sponsors the ballroom club. She sponsors the club and consults two outside instructors, according to junior Genesis Buendia. Buendia also stated that “in ballroom, she’s good at dancing and is very supportive of our club, which our club members appreciate very much.”

Señora Melody Sweigert is more than a Spanish teacher; one who has three cats, enjoys gardening, loves chocolate ice cream, and has a son. She is an integral member of the SHS community.
