DYSTOPIAN FILMS TAKE OVER BOX OFFICE

By: Jillian Lachcik, Reporter

When it comes to movies, there have been plenty of distinct trends. Over the years, the world has seen the alien, vampire, and even zombie trends sell out theatres. However, recently one trend has come about in the box office: dystopian movies.

These futuristic films have mainly come about from books, and their interesting plot lines have drawn in enough people to make all of these come to the big screen. This could in turn mean that more new authors may want to venture into the dystopian trends.

In this day and age, many moviemakers now have the proper CGI technology to make most of these book ideas come to life, which could be why some of the movies are so successful. Some of the most popular dystopian book-to-movie transformations nowadays include The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Maze Runner.

Senior Chris Fordham says, “I think that the more of these books are read, the more movies like this will come out. I personally love The Hunger Games, so I’d be fine with that!”

The Hunger Games, originally written by Suzanne Collins, has most definitely become one of the most successful book-to-movie trilogies of all time, and has brought recognition to many dystopian books over the past few years. The films themselves have already established themselves as some of the most popular of this generation.

In terms of Divergent, it has already proven that it will be extremely prominent throughout the next few years. Divergent and The Hunger Games have already made $560 million in the United States alone.

Sophomore Sara Cushing says, “I was extremely excited for The Hunger Games and Divergent, so as long as more of these movies come out, I’m in!”

Besides these two quite noticeable films, another highly anticipated dystopian film is said to come out in mid-September: The Maze Runner. The film focuses on a teen named Thomas who is thrown into “The Glade” with no memory of his life before this land. Set to release on September 19, the film is predicted to make around as much money as The Hunger Games and Divergent.

Senior Taylor Jones says, “All of these futuristic movies are really interesting, and I can’t wait for more of them to come out.”

As long as these movies keep evolving and setting the stage for even more visual action, there’s no telling how far the dystopian film trend could go.
