Over the years, we have seen many fashion trends come and go. Some good and some not so good, but I think we can all agree that the 90s and 2000s were some of the most iconic decades in fashion history. From low-rise pants, to jeans that are 3 sizes too big, to tube tops and teeny-tiny t-shirts that barely cover anything, you name it! It’s all coming back into fashion. We can find these nostalgic outfits on social media, in movies, and even here at Seminole High School. When I’m walking through the halls, I see that skinny jeans are out and the staple pieces of the 90s and Y2K are in, but when did this generational repeat start?

Well, it all starts with fashion designers recycling trends from the past. However, it’s important to know that the industry’s obsession with the past is not a new concept. They have always been utilizing different pieces or ideas from older trends. In fact, most of the 90s and 2000’s trends were really just reimagined versions of different styles from the ’60s and ’70s. According to fashion stylist, Heather Newberger, “fashion tends to work in 30-year cycles”. For example, the clog shoe from the ’70s came back in the ’90s. Sometimes these new, yet old looks stick and at other times the media is totally against them. However, in this case, our generation ran with this retro style. Among most teens and young people, it has almost become a stigma to wear skinny jeans and a basic t-shirt, especially when adults around them are wearing it. It is pretty ironic being that they were the original trendsetters and, better yet, alive when these trends were taking place, the first time around that is.
