FILMS PUT MODERN TWISTS ON TIMELESS TALES

As a child it would be quite odd to read a story that involved some favorite characters, like Hansel and Gretel, slaying witches.  Some movie makers have been taking traditional children’s books and putting a twist on them.

In 2013, the movie Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters came out. According to http://www.the-numbers.com that movie sold an estimated $225,703,475 worldwide. The movie involved Hansel and Gretel hunting witches and killing them, because when they were children a witch tried to eat them. Later in the movie they found out that their mother was a good witch, and that Gretel had some of her own powers which had been helping her track witches through the years.

An anonymous sophomore said, “I honestly dislike the fact that people add stuff to movies based on books because it ruins things that books convey. When movie makers keep movies close to the books they base them on, they usually come out better.”

In Snow White and the Huntsman, the Evil Queen finds out that Snow White is destined to be greater than her. In this movie version the Evil Queen has a brother that assists her with her evil plans.

The Queen also relies on sucking the beauty out of young girls. Snow White escapes to the forest, and there the Huntsman that is sent to kill her trains her and protects her. With the help of 7 dwarfs they vanquish the queen and take back the kingdom.

Another Snow White twist is Mirror, Mirror. It involves an evil queen taking control of the kingdom. Snow White is exiled to the forest and she meets 7 dwarfs. She later meets a prince that the queen was trying to marry for his money. With the help of the dwarfs and the prince they take back the kingdom and restore joy to the townspeople by ruling fairly.

Freshman Madison Shadron said, “My favorite movie based on a children’s book with a twist is Red Riding Hood. It has horror, suspense to keep you watching, and I like how it’s like a different point of view from the original.”

In 2011, Red Riding Hood was released. It was set in a medieval village that was haunted by a werewolf that came out during full moons and killed innocent people. The main character, Valerie, lives in the woods, and while the wolf has had many opportunities to kill her, instead it spoke to her.

Later she fears that the wolf is either one of the two men she cares about. She thought it was either her best friend from her childhood or her close friend that she cares about, but she finds out it is her grandma. At the end her boyfriend is bitten and knows that he would turn into a wolf, so they leave the village together.

People who have seen this type of movie may ponder ides of what they would like to see. There are many different stories that could be possible movies. What do the students want to see?

Azariah Towns said, “The Little Mermaid would be cool. If Ariel was a part of a mobster mermaid family and Eric was part of a human mobster family. It’s like the Godfather + Romeo and Juliet + the Little Mermaid.”

Some people love these kinds of movies, and others don’t. Either way they usually stand out from the original stories and show brilliant ideas of people who think “outside the box.”
