Towards the upperclassmen years of high school, students begin to realize their passions and with a wide variety of programs and extracurriculars, students have so many hands-on options to test run their future. Within our student body, there are so many diverse ambitions and as the college application process begins, many seniors are selecting their career field of interest.
With so many routes to choose from, a lot of students are torn between multiple career fields. Rylee Lowe shares that she has an interest in becoming a forensic pathologist but is torn between that or becoming a full-time nail tech. Lowe has a passion for both fields and is glad that she has so many career options ahead of her and even the option to pursue both.
Another popular field is STEM, a field that offers numerous career paths. One student who wants to pursue a STEM major is Madison Van Loon. Van Loon has aspirations of becoming a criminal psychologist. She has been intrigued by the field since she was younger and began watching forensic shows. The field stuck out to her a lot because she wanted to be a part of the criminal law process and be able to understand the question “What mental motives are behind the crime?”.
The medical field is extremely popular as a result of our Health Academy program. One student who’s career aspiration has been influenced by the program is Christine Doria. Doria wants to become a registered nurse and specialize further from there. She shares the inspiration came from “seeing healthcare professionals in action and understanding the difference they make for individuals and communities”. Doria sees nursing as a way to not only treat patients but also make a difference through compassionate care. In regard to her hands-on training, she shares, “These opportunities gave me a real-world understanding of nursing that’s hard to replicate in a traditional classroom. Health academy helped me build foundational skills, from communication to patient care, and it confirmed that nursing is the career I want to pursue”
For many students with creative sides, marketing is a major they lean towards. Autumn Bennett is interested in pursuing a career in marketing or advertising, since they both appeal to the need for creativity and stability within a career. She likes the idea of entering a field where she is able to challenge herself.
Likewise, Austin Hertz also has “an interest in marketing and ha[s] experience making social media posts and flyers for leadership”. Hertz has taken classes at Seminole State such as Art, Film, and Music appreciation along with Intro to Jazz and Blues that has also brought out his love for music and producing. He hopes to become a Marketing Head or Creative director for a company one day and pursue his passion for music.
Public service is a field that is used to describe individuals with jobs in law enforcement, social work, emergency management, teachers, and other government jobs. A student interested in the public service field is Harison Wezel. Wezel states, “I went to Informed about the Uniform and was fascinated by the Seminole County Sherrifs office and spoke to an officer who told me what a typical work day was like”. This experience allowed him to explore his career options in public service and possibly as a police officer.
Remember that there is no pressure to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life, and you have time to change your mind and experiment. There are so many career paths, and we at The Seminole Times wish the best of luck to those exploring their future options.
