The new season of the hit Netflix series, You, has just released its newest and season finale on Thursday April 24th. Fans have been tracking updates since the first trailer for the season dropped on March 10th of this year. The season finale continues on Joe’s journey as he makes his return back to New York City with Kate, who is seen in season four of the show. In the city, he meets a new woman, Bronte, and following his heart on the path for his desires, his calculated life that he has crafted for so long starts to come undone.
You’s first season released in 2018 on Lifetime and the show was based on the novel with the same name, You. The series follows our main character, Joe Goldberg, who is a bookstore manager in New York City on the surface, but is truly a serial killer who will do anything in the name of love. Beck is the main love interest in the first season who Joe stalks and eventually begins dating after getting rid of all the obstacles or problems in her life. Once she finds out who he really is, she attempts to get away but is in the end killed by him.
Beginning the second season, Joe moves to Los Angeles to get away from his past in the city and to escape his ex-girlfriend, Candace, who he thought he had killed but had actually survived. In Los Angeles, Joe finds his new obsession, a woman named Love. However Joe can’t escape his past and with Candace finding him and attempting to expose him, Joe finds out his new lover is actually just like him, a killer. The season ends with Love killing Candace and Joe put off with how similar she is to him.
Season three follows Joe and Love’s marriage and the complicated problems that come with it, like their new baby. The new family move to the suburbs and Joe finds his new routine life unfitting for him and he can’t stop his tendencies of finding a new dark obsession, killing Love at the end of the season. Beginning of season four follows a different storyline with Joe moving to London and joining a group of wealthy London socialites who start dying at the hands of an Eat the Rich killer. The plot twist of the season shows it was Joe all along and that he actually has a Dissociative Identity Disorder.
The season finale of the show follows Joe and his return to New York with Kate Lockwood, his obsession from season four. Along with his return, he gets his son, Henry, back. He again attempts to become a new man with his new wealth, however he once again becomes infatuated with a new girl named Bronte, who actually wants revenge for Beck after being a student of hers in the past. Though she ends up falling for him, she still is determined to get him to confess, which happens in the end after holding him at gunpoint and calling the police. Though in the process she is shot and almost drowned, Joe is imprisoned in the end while serving multiple life sentences. With the ending comes some critics, such as the show trying too hard using gen-z slang or the ending being too “feminist.”
SHS junior, Prisni Nawala, gives her opinion on the new season so far: “The season finale definitely met the high expectations that I had. I wasn’t really a fan of the new girl but she was a really good actor and the story plus execution was perfect. The last episode was a perfect ending for a finale that we all think of, especially in these types of shows.”
With the season finale just having come out, make sure you begin the binge before being spoiled by your friends or on the internet.
