“May the force be with you.” are the infamous words that sparked a cultural phenomenon with the movie series Star Wars. The first film, A New Hope, grossed $775.4 million. Now, 11 movies later, the franchise is worth $70 billion.
Many Star Wars fans celebrate May 4th, also known as “May the 4th be with you.” To celebrate the day, some go to Disney’s Hollywood Studios Star Wars land, while others binge-watch the movies at home. Senior, Ava Hernandez, stuck with the second option, “Revenge of the Sith because I feel like that’s when the most action happens, in my opinion, and the entire plot just keeps me on my toes because of all the emotions and betrayal,” is the movie she watches.
While some, like Hernandez, enjoy rewatching their favorite films, Senior Irfaan Matin, prefers to “rewatch some of the films that I haven’t seen in a while.”
“People should definitely start watching Star Wars if they haven’t already, because although it’s long, the storyline is very interesting and the whole franchise makes you have to really focus to understand it because if you miss one thing, you could be really confused, which is something I love about it.” is Hernandez’s motivation to get people into the saga.
Matin enjoys the movies for its visuals, “I think Star Wars has a complex storyline beyond just sci-fi films, and understanding it exposes you to some of the greatest cinema ever made.”
Fans love the franchise because of its memorable characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and many more. “The whole scene of Anakin turning to the dark side and fighting Obi-Wan is really entertaining to watch, and he has to be by far one of my favorite characters when he is good and also after he turns evil.” Hernandez explains how each viewer has a favorite character that they can resonate with.
Each movie is a whirlwind of storytelling. Matin’s favorite movie is,” Revenge of the Sith by far. It’s the one I grew up watching since I was a kid, and has the biggest change in the plot of the entire franchise.”
So whether you have grown up watching Star Wars or not, it’s definitely worth diving into. Hernandez appreciates: “The actors really play a part, which is why I enjoy it because of how well they played the characters as well as all of the different plots that go on during all of the movies and the mix of action, tragedy, and romance.” The mix of sci-fi, romance, and action created a historic movie series unlike any other.
