‘NOLES PREPARE FOR COUNTY SCIENCE FAIR

After finalizing their research for the past three months, students in the Experimental Science class will present their projects to a series of judges at the Seminole County Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Around twenty Seminole High School students will attend the Seminole County Science and Engineering Fair. Categories include: Animal Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Energy and Transportation, Medicine and Health Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, and many more.

A student researcher who receives first place will go to the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair in Lakeland, Florida, which is open to the public, as is the Seminole County Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Scholarships are usually provided by Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) and Rollins College for outstanding projects.

Winners will be nominated to go to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) where student researchers from around the world will be representing their countries with innovative science experiments that will change the future.

Besides receiving first-place awards, students may also receive scholarships and cash. The students also gain knowledge in other areas of science and engineering by observing other students’ boards.

Last year, one Seminole High School student made it to the ISEF. This year at ISEF, the top winner will receive a $50,000 scholarship.

Now a student at the University of Toronto, Enakshi Shah, along with three other Seminoles, completed an engineering project with wind turbines. Their project was able to make it to the international science fair.

This year there will be more science fair contestants entering from Seminole High School.

Sophomore Shelby Resnick said that her project was, “To demonstrate the correlation between the obesity rate of American kids and public school interests.”

Junior Aneesh Jindal said, “I’m creating an Android application that demos how fine permission manager should work on Android.”

Sophomore Lindsay Martin said, “[My project’s] purpose is to determine whether or not there is a synergistic antimicrobial effect on E. coli when combining an antibiotic and fly hemolymph.”

Winners of the Seminole County Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be announced at the Seminole Towne Center in Sanford on February 15. Volunteers are greatly needed to support the Seminole County Regional Science and Engineering Fair, as well.
