STEP TEAM STEPS THEIR WAY TO STRONGER SISTERHOOD

Seminole’s step team is a “team of multicultural, multidenominational high school students,” said step team sponsor Misty Beasley. Participating in the step team is a way for students to better their leadership skills by engaging in different forms of creative art like dancing and stepping.

Many see them perform at pep rallies. There aren’t many of them as there are cheerleaders and Dazzlers but their talent never ceases to amaze Seminole and their performances are always looked forward to.

The step team, known as Seminole’s Finest, has been invited to several competitions all over Central Florida. Not only do they compete, but they’re also active participants in parades, fundraisers, and other school-spirited events on campus.

Competitions usually consist of fifteen teams representing different high schools. At a Lakeland competition last year, the step team placed first. At all their competitions, they have either placed second or third.

Dazzler Johana Perlaza commented on how far Seminole’s steppers have come. “I’ve been watching the Step team’s performances since I was a freshman. They really are getting better every year.”

Step team captain and junior Diamond Hill agreed by saying, “We’re definitely getting better. We’re progressive.” When asked what the step means to her, she said “The step team motivates me, gives me school spirit, and keeps me out of trouble. It also helps me be a better leader.”

Many ‘Noles don’t know how much dedication it takes to be a stepper. Seminole’s Finest practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hours. Anybody who sees them can see how much they’re in the zone when it comes to practicing. Through many people see them, they never break concentration.

Freshman JaQuessia Lawson, who has two friends who are steppers, commented by saying “My friends Shantavia Walker and Tashara Matthews are both very devoted to dancing. It’s who they are. The step team is their life.”

La’Myia Vallot, a freshman stepper, agreed that the team is like a sisterhood. She added by saying, “We have two boys on Step team, but it’s the same. They’re like brothers to us.”

Whether the step team is a sisterhood or a group of talented individuals, their synch and rhythm is unmatched. “The Step team is people uniting to be heard,” Hill stated.

The step team’s vibrancy, enthusiasm, and skill are all sound indicators of their devotion and love for what they do—stepping.
