STUDENTS ANTICIPATE ARRIVAL OF MOCKINGJAY: PART 1

By: Katherine Lachcik, Reporter

The wildly popular dystopian book-to-movie series, The Hunger Games, is to release the first half of its third installment, Mockingjay, on November 21, 2014. Mockingjay is the final book of the Hunger Games trilogy written by Suzanne Collins and is expected to be one of the top-earning movies this year.

“I’m super excited- I’ve read all the books and I’ve seen all the movies so far, I’ve been waiting so long!” says sophomore Breanna Magiera.

New characters essential to the plot of the film will appear in Mockingjay: Part 1, such as Alma Coin, president of District 13, played by Julianne Moore. Also appearing will be characters from the previous movie, Catching Fire, such as Johanna Mason and Plutarch Heavensbee. As the release date for Mockingjay: Part 1 draws closer, students enthusiastically anticipate its arrival.

“I love the books, and I’m excited to see how they make the movie like the book,” says sophomore Pareena Sharma.

In Mockingjay, the main character Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, is the symbol of the Districts’ rebellion against the oppressive Capitol. She and many others take refuge and train with the rebels in District 13, which was previously thought to be destroyed. Katniss fulfills the role of the Mockingjay, but consequently brings many difficulties and dangers to her and her loved ones.

“I’m not a super fan, but I love Katniss and I’m super excited for her. I also want to know what happened to Peeta,” says junior Ahyeon Cho.

The two predecessors to the upcoming film, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, each made over $150 million on opening weekend. Mockingjay: Part 1 is expected to have similar success when it hits theaters, possibly making the series one of the top-grossing in movie history.

The official trailer has already gained millions of views, and the soundtrack for the film is also soon releasing. As November 21 approaches, many students continue to eagerly await the arrival of Mockingjay by following news and events about the movie.
