The leaves are falling, the atmosphere is changing, and the pumpkins are back which also means autumn has returned; while all of these are some of the greatest parts of fall, only one part can worm its way into a person’s heart– food. Autumn has so many delicious treats to offer. Some of the best treats include some of the best fall flavors such as cinnamon, maple, and caramel.
Arguably one of the best fall classics is pumpkin pie. The blend of flaky, buttery crust and a creamy pumpkin filling, that will give anyone a kick, can melt its way into any person’s heart. While it may seem like something quite basic, it does not fail to hit the spot.
One fall and carnival classic is the caramel apple. While it may be somewhat overhyped, IB sophomore Riya Malladi heavily disagrees. She loves them because “they are sweet and sticky,” and in her book they are “a favorite” that still remains as a treat bought every year. A fun spin off of the caramel apple is the iconic candy apple lollipop which is always seen in the baskets of trick or treaters or at stores on the shelves.
Now turning attention towards the “king of cinnamon,” the cinnamon roll. IB sophomore Anwesha Joshi “loves cinnamon rolls. They give me a cozy and homey feel.” With a soft, spicy center and a deliciously sweet icing, who would not love a cinnamon roll?
Another fall favorite is the epitome of ooey gooeyness, the sweetest sandwich, the s’more. Named after its ability to make anyone want another, the s’more is a year round classic that really has its time to shine over the warm fall campfire. Even though it may be a simple combination of graham crackers, marshmallow, and chocolate, it always hits the spot. A fun way to switch one up is to make some changes to it. Some people put some melty peanut butter in to add some nuttiness, others use chocolate filled marshmallows instead of regular ones in order to really ramp it up.
Often, popular fall treats are not made favorites for just their flavor, but also for their aesthetics. There are so many enjoyable, cute snacks and treats that can be bought or made. A personal favorite of mine is the maple cookie. It consists of a maple cream filling sandwiched between two cookies in the shape of a maple leaf. Some of these snacks do not even have to include any fall flavors to be fun; for example, the viral pumpkin bagels that many people would drive miles to get. Even though many of the recipes that were online included pumpkin puree and cinnamon, some people decided to stick to their comfort zone with a classic bagel recipe. They still got to enjoy the cute little pumpkin shaped bagels, but did not have to sacrifice their taste buds and liked to have it.
All of these treats are amazing, but they are not the only ones that arrive with autumn, there are so many more. Different trends allow for every person to discover new sweets and make them their own. Often, the best treats exhibit simplicity rather than complex recipes and ingredients. A perfect example of this would be candy apples or s’mores. Both maintain great reputation with amazing taste while still remaining as quick and easy treats. Fall brings so many new options, and there are so many ways to combine these treats to make new ones. Sometimes the best way to find a new treat to enjoy is to be creative and make your own.
