As the second semester begins and everyone gets back into the groove, so do the clubs. This past Saturday, Beta Chi, the club for IB students, held their first event of the semester, ice skating. The event was held at the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den from 4:30 to 6:30. It featured students having fun and a playlist that IB sophomore Riya Malladi said was “fire” after hearing Drake’s hit song God’s Plan.
Unfortunately, ice skating is not everyone’s forte, but it definitely is some people’s. While some students were clinging to the wall from the second they entered to the second they left, others were zooming around on the ice having the time of their lives. And these were not the only two groups on the ice, with some having absolutely no idea how to skate when they got there, but left the rink as pros. One such person was IB sophomore Charvi Batchu who had been ice skating “once before” and walked in wobbling, but left “feeling more confident” in her skating skills. She was one of many who caught on quickly and faced close to no struggle while trying to skate on their own.
Some people were not as lucky with learning as others, Malladi shared how she was struggling to skate without falling. Batchu added that Malladi “looked like a walking penguin” while trying to let go of the wall and skate on her own. In fact, I also struggled to skate at first, but eventually got the hang of it and probably damaged my ankle in the process.
This event was not held so students could show off their skating skills or learn how to skate, it was so IB students had a chance to hang out with their friends outside of school. IB sophomore Saanvi Dasararaju said “it was fun” and “a good break from school” where she had a chance to hang out with her friends without the stress of school lurking in her mind.
This event, like many others, was another success. Beta Chi only has two events left before this year ends, which actually makes the rest seem not so long. The beginning of February brings bowling with a break in March, and in April comes the much anticipated Beta Chi banquet, one which students have said is better than homecoming.
