From April 9th to April 12th, Seminole High School’s (SHS) theater put on the production of a musical that needs no introduction, Mean Girls. For Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the musical started at 7 pm, while on Sunday it was at 2 pm along with senior bows. This was one of SHS theater’s longest musicals they have performed, with the runtime being over two hours. The original musical debuted on Broadway in 2018 with a modern take on the story along with new songs, it was a hit and was nominated for over 10 awards.
Starring senior Kylie Pendarvis as Cady Heron, she moves from Africa to Illinois where she gets to attend a public school for the first time. Opening the musical was Janis, played by senior Kallie Cummings, and Damian, played by senior Jaden Adams, singing A Cautionary Tale. In her calculus class, Cady meets her new crush, Aaron Samuels, played by senior Brayden D’Abbondanza. Continuing through the school day she meets the Plastics, Regina George, played by junior Sofia Njuguna, Gretchen, played by junior Caelin De Guzman, and Karen, played by junior Kelsie Mclain. The musical continues following the original story with slight changes such as social media being involved and how the Jingle Bell dance scene went. Just like the movie, the musical follows Cady taking over Regina’s place in school and becoming completely plastic. As Regina finds out that Cady has been sabotaging her all along, the two argue leaving the school where Regina is then hit by a bus. Cady reflects on what she has become and takes the blame for the burnbook, along with following her passion of math, with the musical ending with her winning both the mathletes competition and spring fling queen.
The Friday show had a record breaking amount of sales with an audience of 403 in attendance. For the Sunday show, the focus was on the seniors, a part of both the cast and crew. After the show had ended, the director Mr. Cortelli shouted out all the students who helped out behind the scenes, he then had all the seniors line up on stage, receive roses, and take their final bow.
This was the last show of the school year, and the last show for many senior members. It was a great way to end the year and an amazing show to end the seniors off with.
