On September 2, Seminole High school students gathered after school for the very first interest meeting of Happy Paws– a brand-new club dedicated to rescuing animals and spreading awareness about animal welfare. The meeting introduced the club’s mission and laid out opportunities for involvement throughout the year.
Happy Paws is led by two seniors- Camilla Gonzales and Karielyz Melendez. The two co-presidents bring together different perspectives but share the same passion- helping animals in need. Their vision is to create a club where students can connect their love of animals through service, leadership, and community engagement.
The club’s faculty sponsor is Ms. Greene, a Health Academy teacher who was excited to support the student leaders in starting something new on campus. With her guidance, Happy Paws is already shaping up to be a welcoming space for anyone interested in animal rescue or advocacy.
During the meeting, the co-presidents explained the club’s goals for the school year. Members will have opportunities to volunteer at local animal shelters, participate in donation drives for supplies such as food, toys, and blankets, and take part in school-wide events to spread awareness about adoption and responsible pet care. The club also plans to use social media as a tool for outreach, sharing information and promoting their projects to a larger audience.
Another key focus of the meeting was leadership. While Camilla and Karaliez are serving as co-presidents, several other leadership positions are still available, including Vice President, Secretary, and Social Media Manager. These roles will give students the chance to develop organizational and communication skills while playing a major part in the club’s activities.
The atmosphere of the meeting was enthusiastic and collaborative, with students eager to get involved. Many who attended expressed excitement about combining community service hours with something they truly care about. For some, it was the opportunity to help shelters in need. For others, it was about raising awareness so that fewer animals are left without homes.
One of the strengths of Happy Paws is its dual focus- making a real difference in the community while giving students a chance to grow. Members will learn not only about the realities of animal care and rescue but also about teamwork, leadership, and compassion. The club’s leaders emphasized that everyone has a place, whether they can commit to regular volunteer work or simply want to support donation drives and awareness campaigns.
Happy Paws will continue meeting regularly throughout the school year, with announcements about specific events coming soon. With the guidance of Ms. Greene, the leadership of Camilla and Karaliez, and the support of a growing group of dedicated members, the future looks bright for both the club and the animals it seeks to protect.
