SCHOOL LUNCHES LAUNCH FORWARD: NEW MENUS, NEW DEALS

Students purchasing their lunches at school can expect to sink their teeth into a flurry of new menu items and styles of food that are already being offered and planned for Seminole High School’s cafeteria.

Seminole County Public Schools’ Food Services Department has a number of changes lined up for Seminole High, and has worked hard to promote the new items available to students. Some new items include combination salad and make-your-own-sub bars and more vegetarian-friendly cuisine like Veggie Supreme pizzas.

Many students learned of one of the cafeteria’s newest offerings, a yogurt parfait meal with fruit, through a widely publicized contest held by Food Services. Any student who purchased the meal during the month of March was “entered to win an iPad 2 provided by General Mills and the National Dairy Council,” according to Food Services’ Nutrition Specialist and Coordinator Mr. Richard Miles, who announced the contest during a student press conference held on January 18, 2012.

Posters in the cafeteria and announcements over NDN, Seminole’s morning news, have alerted many students to the new options.

Freshman Andrew Kwon heard about the new offerings and iPad giveaway when, he said, “I saw the posters in the cafeteria.”

Sophomore Jenny Raman said, “[My friend] WeiWei buys them pretty much every day, so they must be good.”

Still, some ‘Noles haven’t tried the new offerings, even with the ongoing promotions. Kwon detailed, “I haven’t personally tried it [the new parfait], although I do know one person who has tried it.”

Raman said, “I’m content with bringing my own lunch, but if the price was decent, then I would consider buying lunch once in a while. You know, just for a change.”

The meals, like all others currently offered, cost $2.75 for students who pay full price, and $0.40 for those on reduced-price status.

Also in the works is a new salad and make-your-own-sub bar, which has already been implemented at Winter Springs High School. Mr. Miles described it as “like Subway.” The new infrastructure needed to provide students with this option is being financed by a grant from First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign.

Other options will be available to vegetarians who want to buy lunches at school. Vegetarians, who may have once found themselves lost in a world of chicken sandwiches and pepperoni pizzas, will be able to order Veggie Supreme pizzas, with toppings like tomatoes, green peppers, and onions available.

The Seminole’s staff was invited to try many new items after this article was written. Stay tuned for the reviews!
