As the school year starts to wind down, everything begins to feel a little bit different. The days seem both longer and shorter at the same time; longer because of all the assignments, study guides, and exams piling up, but shorter because everyone knows summer is just around the corner. There’s this strange mix of stress and excitement that hangs in the air, especially now that testing season has officially arrived.
Walking into school lately feels heavier than it did a few months ago. Teachers are moving quickly, trying to squeeze in the last lessons before finals, while also reviewing everything we’ve learned throughout the year. It’s not just about learning new material anymore it’s about remembering, understanding, and proving what we already know. That pressure can feel overwhelming at times. You sit in class, looking at pages of notes or study guides, wondering how you’re supposed to keep it all straight in your head.
Testing season brings a different kind of energy. Classrooms are quieter, more focused. Instead of group discussions or projects, there are long stretches of silence as everyone works through questions, trying their best. You can almost feel the tension of people tapping their pencils, flipping pages, or staring at the clock. It’s not that anyone wants to rush through it, but at the same time, everyone just wants to be done.
Even outside of class, the stress doesn’t fully go away. At home, there’s studying, reviewing notes, maybe even staying up later than usual trying to prepare. It can feel like there’s always something you should be doing. At the same time, though, motivation starts to get a little harder to hold onto. After a whole year of work, it’s natural to feel tired. Burnout is real, and by this point, a lot of students are running low on energy. Daniya Sessions, junior shares “ This year has been a lot but was amazing to make more connections.”
But there’s also something kind of special about this time of year. Even with the stress, there’s a shared understanding between everyone you’re all going through the same thing together. There’s more encouragement, more “you got this” moments, even small things like helping a friend review or laughing about how confusing a question was after a test. It brings people a little closer, even if it’s just for a short time.
And then there’s the thought of summer. It’s always in the back of your mind, like a light at the end of the tunnel. No alarms, no homework, no tests, just time to relax and reset. That thought alone is enough to keep a lot of people going. It’s what makes the long study sessions and stressful exams feel worth pushing through. Elisa Holmes, senior shares: “ The past four years here have been memorable, I grew to love my friends and I’m sad that we’re all separating for college.” With senior’s lasts approaching as well, it is also a bittersweet time for all.
As the final weeks approach, everything starts to feel more real. You realize how much has happened over the years, what you’ve learned, the challenges you’ve faced, and how much you’ve grown, even if you didn’t notice it at the time. Testing isn’t just about grades; it’s kind of a reflection of that whole journey.
In the end, this time of year is a mix of emotions. It’s stressful, yes, but also hopeful. It’s exhausting, but also exciting. And while testing might feel like the hardest part, it’s also the final step before a well-earned break. Soon enough, the tests will be over, the backpacks will be put away, and all that hard work will finally turn into summer freedom.
