After the winter sports pep rally, leadership announced they had a special announcement they would make that night. That announcement ended up being this year’s prom theme! Prom is handled by the junior class council and this year’s prom theme is The Great Gatsby. Prom will be held at Hard Rock Live at Universal City Walk, continuing where it has been held in the past years. Prom this year will be on April 25th from 7 pm to 11 pm, with doors opening at 6:30 pm. Compared to last year’s prom taking place on April 5th, this gives students more time to prepare.
The theme, The Great Gatsby, is inspired by the book and movie under the same name. The book takes place during the Jazz Age and follows millionaire Gatsby as he pursues his former lover, Daisy, who is now married. The atmosphere of both the book and the movie highlights the glamorous and luxurious lifestyle Gatsby leads. Since the theme inspires how the venue is decorated, we should expect a jazzy, glamorous 20s era inspired atmosphere. Senior Sofia Antonio shares her hopes: “I hope the decorations are really elegant and classy to give off a 1920’s vibe. I think it would be cool to have a black and gold color scheme and hopefully an area to take photos with 1920’s style props! I’d want pearl necklaces, masquerade masks, and feather headbands to take photos with. I hope they have a black and white photo booth as well.”
For girls shopping for dresses this year and looking to stay on theme, look to follow the color theme of black, white, gold, and silver. Along with the colors, the 20s was the era of Flappers, so dresses with sequins, beading, or drop waists would suit the theme well. An outfit isn’t complete without accessories, so to pair with your dress, look at pearl necklaces, boas, or feathery headpieces. Now, for guys looking to follow the theme, look for tailored suits, suspenders, and bow ties to fit the 1920’s vibe. Similar to the girls, look for the colors cream, ivory, or light gray. If you’re looking for places to shop, Prom Pageant Couture, Dillards, Windsor, and Macys are great options. Senior Prisni Nawala says: “I don’t plan to follow the prom theme for my outfit, but I really like the theme and think it’s great for my last year. I want to wear a long blue dress, not a body con style but maybe strapless. I’m so excited to see how the venue will look as well, and I hope it stays true to the aesthetic.”
