Seminole High School (SHS) welcomed friends and family of the Sanford community into the winter season by hosting their annual Winter Choir Concert on Tuesday, December 9.
To kick off the show, Destiny Show Choir welcomed members of the audience by running out into the audience holding presents before performing on the stage. The women dressed in Santa Clause dresses, and the men dressed in black and red suits. The Destiny Show choir opened the concert with “Sparklejollytwinklejingley,” composed by Andy Beck.
After the opening act, the president of Festival Choir welcomed the audience for joining the talented students on the night where they performed the sounds of winter! The Festival Choir began with “This Little Babe,” then “Hallelujah, Amen,” “A Spotless Rose” with a solo from Brandon Wynn, and finally “Huron Carol.”
The Festival Choir left the audience in a trance from their harmonic voices, and Serenades were no different! Serenades, assisted by Riley Gerth, a student at SHS, on the cello, sang “Dormi,” “Winter” and “Long, Long Ago.” The melody “Dormi” included a duet between students Korralynn Ruth and Dalorni Briscoe. Afsheen Chowdhury, a junior in Festival Choir, believes that “music brings people together,” and that the Winter Choir performance “brings joy [to SHS] because joyful performers are on stage, and surrounding yourself with happy people lifts spirits, and spreads joy during the holidays.”
Next was Destiny Show Choir with two more acts. This time, the performers were wearing sparkly silver dresses, and the men in a black suit. Destiny Show Choir performed “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Stand in the Light,” followed by a minute-to-win it when the second act concluded.
Beginning Choir performed next, singing “Winter Lullaby” with student Riley Girth on the cello, and “African Noel” with student Danielle Blue as percussion accompaniment. Beginning Choir member Zeke Morales, a junior, says that “the directors and students are talented and help bring holiday spirit by showing what the holiday’s look like in the US for people who are from different cultures.”
The Beginning Choir prepared the audience for the Gospel Choir, who started with “What Child is This/ Carol of the Bells” and “Go Tell it on the Mountain.” The Gospel Choir had the audience’s full attention with “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” as the song started out slow, but progressed into an upbeat, full audience participation moment!
The show concluded with Concert Choir playing “Gesu Bambina” and First Take Acapella’s final song, “Wassail Song.”
