NEW CRICKET TEAM EMERGES

The following article was published as a part of The Seminole’s 2013 April Fool’s issue! The information, quotations, statistics, and other content is completely fictitious and should not be considered a true representation of the school, the administration, or other governing entities.

Cricket is a sport which isn’t well-known to many Americans, but is widely popular in Britain and former British colonies such as India and Pakistan. For many years, students and parents have pushed the school board to create a cricket league in which high school students can play, and those efforts have paid off. At the start of the 2013-2014 school year, Seminole will have a cricket team, funded by the revenue raised from the Beasley Burgers sold at football games.

Seminole parent Rajesh Singh said, “Cricket is a sport that is played in India and Pakistan and there are many Indian and Pakistani students attending Seminole because of the IB program. The school can definitely create a cricket team with many willing players.” Singh has three sons that went to Seminole; is youngest is currently a sophomore.

Seminole as well as other high schools such as University High School (in Orange County) and Oviedo High School will also have cricket teams starting next school year so that Seminole has someone to play. Tryouts will be held one week prior to the start of school.

Senior Dana Callaghan, a native of England said, “I think introducing cricket to Americans will lead to more popularity for the sport. I used to play it as a child.”

She continued, “I heard that there will be a signup sheet for boys and girls in late April or early May.” Details about where to sign up are still being worked out. When sign up sheets are available, there will be an announcement on the school news.

Sophomore Vijay Kapur said, “A cricket team at Seminole would be a great way to accommodate for the multicultural student body. I love cricket, but it’s not that popular in America. The team will bring awareness to the sport. The kids that grew up with cricket can participate in it.”

The future looks hopeful for Central Florida’s high school cricket league. There are cricket leagues in Florida, but few to none at the high school level. Keep a lookout for when and where to sign up for the first Seminole High School cricket team!
