FLORIDA’S BEST BEACHES: a look at the hidden paradises.

Although summer break may have already rolled away, Florida’s weather is still beach-friendly through the fall. The state of Florida boasts some of the most popular beaches in the world known for their beauty and welcoming atmosphere. However, many people who live in Florida still don’t know about some of the best spots for swimming and sunbathing that are just around the corner. Freshman Sean Newman says, “New Smyrna and Daytona are really nice, but going somewhere new is always interesting.” For those wanting to explore, here’s a guide for exploring the best beaches the Sunshine State has to offer.

Delray Beach is located in South Florida and is about a three and a half hour drive from Sanford. The dunes here are largely preserved, providing picturesque scenery filled with all kinds of wildlife. The beach is never too crowded, so nature-lovers can enjoy the view without much interruption from noisy tourists. Senior William Jensenn says, “Crowded beaches aren’t much fun. I’d rather be somewhere quiet.” The town itself is also known for its many local restaurants and shops.

Sebastian Inlet is only two hours away from Sanford, and offers a 3-mile stretch of pristine oceanfront. This beach is a popular spot for surfers as well as a well-known camping site. The area is a major sea turtle nesting area and home to an impressive variety of bird life. Visitors regularly spot bottlenose dolphins and manatees in the water as well. The McLarty Treasure Museum is another main attraction, and is the place to see real pirate treasures fished from Florida waters.

Fort DeSoto Park is a three hour drive, and offers 900 acres of bike trails, beach and nature walks. There is a completely natural area away from any cars, and part of the beach is a leash-free dog area. Sophomore Alex Butler says, “I would love to go to a beach where my dog could run around without a leash.” Here, pets can join their owners for a stroll through the sand or a swim in the Gulf waters.
